Every part of the human pregnancy journey is Sacred. No other life experience can compare. It is truly unique unto itself. The fourth trimester creates a space to integrate this life altering experience.

 

As mothers, from the awe -inspiring moment we find out we are with child - it begins.

 

Perhaps you had always dreamed of this moment, or you have had to fight for it or were completely taken by surprise. 

 

Each experience of growing new life brings with it new learnings and incomparable personal growth.  

Nine months (rather closer to 10 for most and that is oh-so normal btw) of navigating all the feelings and preparation of birth and beyond. Researching all the products you will need to support you after the arrival of your baby. 

 

In Western culture we place much of the emphasis on these nine months, breaking it down into 12 week trimester chunks. We mostly keep it practical. Doctors appointments and planning meticulously for the birth, as we move towards the day we meet the wee little human on board for the ride.

 

Consciously or unconsciously, we begin the right of passage that is pregnancy, like all others, on a journey...with blind faith driven by the need for acquiring new skills, and knowledge for the task ahead. 

 

We overcome challenges and discomfort (heartburn anyone?), knowing within ourselves, we have all that is required to birth our babies, in whatever way that becomes for every mother individually. After the labour or the surgery each with its obstacles to overcome…the reward will outweigh the endeavour. 

 

Even in moments of doubt or crisis, we as mothers will rise.

 

Ah and then - the Birth itself...the glorious culmination of overcoming the hard things.

 

The climbing to the top of the mountain so-to-speak and taking in the breathtaking view, exhausted and exhilarated - you get to meet your baby earth-side for the first time.

1. TUNE IN TO YOUR INATE WISDOM 

Ideally before birth, in those final weeks of pregnancy, turn inward and ask yourself what would feel supportive for you in the weeks following the birth. 2. ASK FOR WHAT YOU NEED

 

After you spend some time checking in with what feels good for you support-wise, and checking out the resources above, it’s time to clear with your trusted people about what you need from them. 

 

o   FOOD - Eat to nourish,  the importance of  post-partum nutrition 

o   TIME -  Some one to take the Baby so you can rest, a little self care in the basic form of a shower or bath

o   CARE - Post birth care, you may need ice packs for a vaginal birth or wound care for a C-Section

o   SPACE – A tough one to ask for but setting clear boundaries with loved ones is gift to yourself

o   BABYSITTING - Some one to take older children or entertain them for a time

o   CLEANING - enough said  

 

3. SHARE YOUR VISION

 

Your partner and birth team or older children, your own Mama, Aunts, Fathers and any other of your loved ones. Let your trusted people know of your wish for a slow 4th trimester. Inviting them in creates a sense of sacred and special and lets them be a part of this time in a deeply honoured way. 

 

 

4. PREPARE YOUR SPACE

 

Feeling organised pre-birth for the space you will inhabit post birth is a gift to yourself. Where will you be in the house? What do you need?

 

Turn the room in to a sanctuary.

 

Imagine a supportive cave like energy that will wrap you and your baby up in bliss - what will make you feel settled here? 

Oils, candles, a special blanket or bedspread. Photos near the bed of family and friends. Maybe its’ simply a clean decluttered space. Soft music, books for pleasure, a favourite film. 

 

 

5. HONOUR & SUPPORT YOURSELF

 

This time is for you. To recalibrate. Carrying your baby safely earth-side is a huge achievement, your body needs time to heal. Taking care of yourself with a thoughtful approach to nourishment, supplements and deep rest is the best foundation to take on your role of Mother. When you start to feel up for returning to the world, remember those things that light you up and try and incorporate that in your day. A cup of tea, a walk in the garden, fresh air, yoga, time with friends and family. Now you have tuned in to your motherly instincts they will continue to guide you, all you need do is lean in and listen.
